  • How To Install Tomtom 7 On Windows Ce

Hi All, A friend of mine has a cheap car GPS (I forget which make, it's not a big one like Tomtom or Navman though) that he was able to get it to drop into the Windows CE operating system on it. He bought and installed Memory Map Mobile and some maps (including aerial photos), it was very impressive and tracked the cars movement/heading whilst panning the aerial imagery. This got me thinking, being a bit of a geek. A lot of double-din car DVD/GPS head units now run Windows CE.

(do an ebay search for 'Dual Zone GPS' and check out the specs) Has anyone got any experience of installing other software on these devices? I'm not sure what's involved in getting them to 'drop into' Windows CE but I like the idea of aerial imagery or even 1:25k OS maps being displayed in my dash in real time, or even just run other Windows CE software on it! Any help or information appreciated?! You can get double din ones, or what I did was stick a very low power PC in the boot and a 7' touchscreen in the dash.

Hi, I've not seen Double DIN Car PC's but I'm guessing they don't have 4x45W RMS or touch screen etc? I like the idea of the Head Unit as they're pretty cheap £225 + and postage/import duty, and has it all in one touch screen device. If I had a 'Carputer' I can imagine it failing with constant error messages like Windows does, not very good when you're in the 3rd lane trying to skip to the next track!?

Some of them have amps built in - my mate put one in his BMW, it has a touch screen, but think that cost a bit more. For example - but thats £800! The way I went was to keep the head unit and feed the line out from the PC to the CD Changer input, then I have a touch screen in the dash (Mazda make the part for the job). I've had mine in for a year and a half now and only had 1 crash - just needed to plug in a PS/2 keyboard so I could 'click space to continue'. Its also hooked up to the audio controls, so to skip to the next track in the 3rd lane - I can use the steering wheel controls or the ones on the head unit. I'll agree the memory map module is good, but the mapping cost is extortionate!

I have the whole country at 1:50, 1:25 and 1:25 aerial, a little over 30GB of data. The one thing I would like is a plug in that would do proper route planning like tomtom. I'll have to suggest though, a proper computer, the WinCE stuff is good, especially for a car, but imagine having a WiFi set up too, that while your car is in range of your WiFi, (on the drive) you could copy over data (films/videos/ music and GPS waypoints). Well after Gordon Browns announcment late last year, all government owned data (OS maps included, except paper maps?) is going to be free.

So all the 1:25k, 1:50k and probably the aerial photo, not sure about 1:10k. These head units support 4Gb cards which would be enough in most circumstances. If I'm planning a trip to Shrewsbury, I can prepare my route on Memory Map, including any diversions I want to do, and 'merge maps' as I go along. Save that to the SD card so when I set off it will all be on one map. The one thing I would like is a plug in that would do proper route planning like tomtom. I'd agree it would be good to be able to access my collection at home whilst on the move, I've thought about that in the past. But I'd probably be looking at £1000 for this functionality (Touch screen + GPS + Wifi). For now I'll have to stick with having to predict what I'm likely to want to listen to before I set off, but to be fair I have a lot of rubbish (live/bootleg stuff) that I could probably distill down to 4Gb, or they do support external USB drives which gets round that.

PS: You might want to check out some software called 'TYRE' (free) (Trace Your Route Anywhere), it uses Google Maps to let you 'drag' a route out, and save it as an itinerary file on your Tomtom. I did use it once, but must've done something wrong as my tomtom thought I'd missed a waypoint so after every new one would re-calculate to try to send me back.
